27. OTHELLO

Emma

Saying goodbye to Kai when he dropped me off early this morning sucked. Knowing I won't see him again for almost a month is digging a Kai-sized hole in my heart, and it feels like he took a piece of me with him when he drove away.

Back in my dorm room now, I reluctantly take off his clothes that I'm still wearing, laying the t-shirt that still smells like his cologne onto my pillow, hoping his scent will transfer onto it so I can pretend he's with me while I sleep. I quickly change into my own clothes and brush my teeth before leaving again for class.

Colm greets me when I take my seat behind him in English. He always manages to beat me here. Our professor announces that we're going to need a partner for our next project, and Colm turns in his seat, cocking an eyebrow over his emerald eyes.

"Duh," I whisper, answering his unspoken question that we'll be partners. His dimples pop against his freckled skin as he smiles before turning back around.

"I'll be assigning each pair a play by Shakespeare," our professor continues. "Your assignment is to read the play you're given, obviously. Then decide on the most poignant or significant part of the play, which you will act out for the class on our last two days before Thanksgiving break. You'll also be responsible for writing an essay about why you chose the scene you did, why it's significant to the story, and the theme that's conveyed. Once you decide on the theme - whether it be good versus evil, appearance versus reality, betrayal, innocence - you get the picture, you will need to include a five page discussion on the theme, how it relates to the characters, to the story, and to real life with modern day examples.

"The theatre department has graciously agreed to let us use some of their costumes for the day you act out the scene, and students taking a stage makeup class will be doing your makeup so you look more of the time. You'll only be given two days in class to work on the project, which means no homework assignments will be given the next two weeks so you all can work on this outside of class."

Once the professor finishes his speech and everyone partners up, he assigns each of us a play. Colm and I are given Othello. Neither of us have read it, so we devise a timeline for reading the play, what we'll work on during class time, and when we'll get together outside of class to rehearse our scene and complete the essay.

By Wednesday, Colm and I have read the play and agree that act three, scene three with Iago and Othello is the best option, focusing on the theme of jealousy. During the two classes we get to work on the project, we come up with an outline for our essay and decide to meet over the weekend to write it. Then we'll spend the rest of the allotted time memorizing and practicing our scene together.
